This is one of the premiers mountaineering institutes in the world, founded on 4th November 1954 by the Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru. This Institute helps to learn people mountaineering. One can gather knowledge about them who climbed Mount Everest and how they became succeeded.
Notable Identity: Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, who set his foot mark on the highest peak of Mount Everest as the first human over the world. This person’s birthplace is Darjeeling and he spent his post Everest period as Field Training Director in HMI.
Tourists’ concern: This place now became a center of tourist attraction and it leads to enjoy the incredible view of Kanchenjunga!

Location Height: 6,900 ft (one of the highest tea factory in the world)
History in Brief:
- In 1860, An Englishman, David Wilson had started the cultivation of Tea and named the garden Wilson Tea Estate.
- After that, In 1903, the ownership has taken by an Indian, Tarapada Banerjee (an aristocrat of Hooghly).
- In 1929, Tarapada Banerjee bought Windsor Tea Estate nearby and merged two. The estate finally named Happy Valley Tea Estate.
- Lastly, the ownership is now at the hand of S K Bansal of Ambootia Tea Group who founded here a factory with a working museum.
It’s a very well maintained tea estate. Sometimes Tea Gardens seems to you that, a green carpet is adorning you. You will find men and women plucking tea leafs.
There are guides for you to understand and enjoy the garden roaming. Guides are friendly enough. From the factory, you can learn about types of Tea and which tea is pure.
You can walk all around and can take pictures as much you want!

At the very beginning, I would like to inform you that don’t compare this zoo with others. This is where you can actually see the Himalayan animals. You will find here some special species, you never see anywhere.
Achievement: In 2014, Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park achieved international award “The Earth Heroes” out of 300 zoos of the world.
This zoo is also called the Darjeeling zoo. It was formerly known as Himalayan Zoological Park which was founded on 14th August 1958 by Dilip Kumar Dey. For travelers, now it’s one of the most famous travel places in Darjeeling.
Area: 67.56 acres.
In 1975, when Indira Gandhi was prime minister, came to visit the park and renamed after Padmaja Naidu.
Zoo includes gallery of different animals. It also includes an off-display breeding centre for snow leopards and red pandas. The zoo is basically famous for its breeding program of Red Pandas, Snow Leopards, Tibetan Wolf, and other some species.

5. Darjeeling Ropeway

Ropeway of Darjeeling is one of the most amazing travel places in Darjeeling for tourists. Ropeway started in 1968. Suddenly it was stopped in 2003 cause of the death of four tourists. It was reopened on 2 February 2012.
Two-way ride is 5 km overall. Cable car runs from 7000 ft to 800 ft and returns to the main point.
You can have some time as a break time at the destination place. You can take tea or coffee; walk on the tea garden, taking photos at ‘Tukvar’ point.

Nature views from ropeway: you can get a panoramic view of Darjeeling via this ropeway trip.
