Why is called Victoria Memorial?

It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria. The building was built from 1906 to 1921. Now it is a museum.

William Emerson, President of the British Institution of Architects. Vincent Esch, an assistant engineer in the Bengal Nagpur Railway.

How Victoria Memorial looks outside and inside?

Victoria Memorial is placed on 64 acres of lawns, ponds, shrubbery, and herbaceous borders with open surroundings. It has 25 galleries inside beneath the big main dome. The Calcutta Gallery, Portrait Gallery, Royal gallery, Sculpture Gallery, and the National Leaders Gallery are mainly focused here. According to the 2009 inquiry, there are nearly 30,000 collections available. 

The building is a wonderful example of the colonial style of architecture. It almost looks like ‘Tajmahal’. The building is made of white marble. The central dome included 4 more domes on the terrace.

The main attraction at the memorial is the huge somber statue of Queen Victoria. A five meters tall black bronze angel statue holding a bugle in her hand is another beautiful architectural work. You will find several allegorical sculptures surrounding the central dome.

The garden is spread over 64 acres. The garden is well-sorted with various seasonal flowers, which make the wonderful environment of hangouts for peoples. There is a big pond. Beautifully planted flowers around the pond and an eye-catching fountain on-premises. 

Some beautiful historical sculptures are also in the garden. Black Victoria Statue, White Lord Curzon, a 16 feet tall statue, the angel of Victory, etc.

The museum building is 184 feet b tall at its central dome height. At the central point of the room, there is a big white marble statue of Queen Victoria. Some statues depicting motherhood are placed at the top of the porch. On the ground floor, collections of paintings, sculptures, etc are arranged among 25 galleries according to their qualities.

How to reach Victoria memorial after reaching Kolkata?

From Kolkata Airport: The distance between Kolkata Airport and Victoria Memorial is 15km. The road distance is 17.4km. The quickest way to reach there is by taxi. It will take almost 21minutes. There is a direct bus from Airport to Alipore Zoo which takes approximately 38 minutes and Alipore zoo is not so far from the Victoria memorial.

The cheapest way to reach Victoria Memorial from Airport is to line the 175 bus. You have to pay $1 and it will take approximately 58 minutes.

From Kolkata Railway: From Rabindra Sadan Metro Station, is only 700 mts away where you can reach by foot.
