The temple is devoted to Devi Durga/Chamundeshwari who is the tutelary deity of Mysore Maharajas for centuries. It is believed that The Hoysala rulers built the main temple in the 12th century. On the other hand, The Vijayanagar rulers built this temple’s tower in the 17th century.
