There are many attractive places in the district of Coorg which is also known as Kodagu in the city of Madikeri under the state of Karnataka, in southern India. Omkareshwara temple is one of them. History of Omkareshwara temple:

Omkareshwara temple was built in 1820 by King Lingarajendra II as a form of Penance. The architecture of the temple is excellent. It is a mix of Islamic and Gothic styles. According to legends, the king killed a Brahmin for his political gains. Because he noticed his misdoings. After the death of the Brahmin, the king started having nightmares that troubled him a lot. To find a way to stop the nightmares he wanted help from other Brahmins. They suggested the King build a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Then he brought up the Holy Shiva Lingam from another holy town Kashi and built this temple which is now known as Omkareshwara temple. 

How does the Omkareshwara temple look?

Omkareshwara temple is a different piece of architecture. A traveler can admire here different kinds of architecture. As the temple has a huge dome in the center and four minarets that surround four corners, it seems like an Islamic Dargah. A traveler can find a copper plate on the entrance door. The windows of the temple have a bar those are built with panchaloha. In between the bars of the window, the alphabet ‘time is placed.  There is a water tank that consists of different kinds of freshwater fish inside the temple. There is a mandapa at the center of the water tank, and it is connected through a walkway. This temple does not have hall sith pillars like other temples in India. This is a simple but elegant temple.

By air: The small town of Madikeri does not have any airports. The nearest airport to the place is Mangalore International airport. Which is about 111 km away from the city. So, if you want to reach Omkareshwar temple by air you need to go via this airport. From the airport, you have to hire any local transport. It can take you to your destination.

By train: The nearest railway station to Omkareshwara temple is the Subrahmanya Road railway station. It is well connected with the other cities of India. The railway station is situated at a distance of 40.59 km from Omkareshwar temple.

By road: The city Madikeri is well connected with the other cities of the state of Karnataka. Several buses are available in the route. So, it is not difficult to reach Omkareshwara temple by road. You can also go there in your vehicle.
