What is Mattupetty Dam?

Mattupetty Dam is basically a water dam and is the first concrete dam in India. It is a source of hydropower located in the Idukki district near the city of Munnar. Due to the availability of water and the normal movement of animals, the dam has been enriched for power generation. Not only that, the pond is also known as one of the most spectacular elephants.

Who Built the Mattupetty Dam?

In India, the Dam is the first concrete dam and it was constructed by the Pallivasal Hydro-Electric project. The purpose of this dam is a power generation and water conservation. 

What is the History of Mattupetty Dam?

This Dam is known to the locals as Madupetty and is the only concrete dam. The dam was once controlled by the government of Kerala. Construction of the dam began in 1947 after independence from British rule and took five years to complete. The dam was constructed at a cost of Rs 220 lakh. This Dam is playing an important role in hydropower generation through its currents.

Why are people attracted to visit the Mattupetty Dam?

The natural beauty of this Dam has become a different attraction for every tourist. Elephants are seen here. As well as ensuring water use in the lands and the dam is playing a role as irrigation for agriculture. The top of the dam is paved and has vehicular roads. People and tourists can enjoy the beauty by walking across the 236.75 meters stretch of the dam and it is a very beautiful place for shooting or taking pictures. The dam is 85.34 m high and has three radial spillway gates. For a tourist, Mattupetty Dam can give a sense of the boundless beauty of nature.

What is the entry fee in Mattupetty Dam?

INR 10 for each person for ordinary boat riding INR 300 and horse riding INR 50 per head.

What is the best time to visit the Mattupetty Dam?

9.30 am to 5 pm on all days of the week and best visit time is especially Winter Season from October to February.

The nearest police station is Rajakkad Police Station.

How to Reach:

 By Air: There was no Airport in Mattupetty but the nearest Airport is Cochin International Airport about 114 km away from Mattupetty. So you can go first to Cochin Airport and then hire a cab or bus to reach this Dam.

By Train: There was no Railway station in Mattupetty too but the nearest Railway station is Angamaly Railway station also called Kalady Railway station which is 115 km far from Mattupetty. So From Angamaly station, you can hire a cab or bus to reach the Mattupetty.

By Road: The distance from Mattupetty to Munnar is 11 km. You can book long-distance buses at night. The seats will be very comfortable and you can sleep on the street. Munnar is its main bus stop so for the rest of the road you can take a cab scaffolding to reach Mattupetty.
