Lakshmi Vilas Palace is one of the greatest palaces in the world. Located in Vadodara city in the state of Gujarat it is the official residence of the Maharaja of Baroda. It is a very large and magnificent Palace. This is the largest private residence in India. Which is four times larger than Buckingham Palace. Who Built the Lakshmi Vilas Palace?

This beautiful palace was constructed by the Gaekwad Family, a Maratha family who were the rulers of the Vadodara state. The royal family still lives in this huge palace.

Who was the Architect of Lakshmi Vilas Palace?

Major Charles Mant was the main architect of the project. After his death, Robert Chisholm was recruited in his place. He was a British architect. He was the pioneer of the indo-Saracenic style of architecture in Madras.

About the Place

The compound of the palace is over 5000 acres which has a lot of buildings, mainly the LVP Banquets and Conventions, Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum, and Moti Bagh Palace. This palace has over 170 rooms. The construction cost of this palace was 1,80,000 pounds or Rs 27,00,000. Lakshmi Vilas palace took twelve years to build.

A golf course was created by Maharaja Pratap sinh in 1930 for the use of his European guests. The former Ranji trophy cricketer, Samarjitsinh who was the grandson of Maharaja Pratapsinh renovated the palace and opened it to the public.

01. Darbar Hall

There is a Darbar Hall, which is still used as a venue for music performances and other cultural events. It is said that this palace has more stained glasses than any other palace in India, even in the whole world. The hall covers almost 5000 square feet. The interior decoration of this hall is amazing. 

02. The Gardens

William Goldring, a specialist in Kew Gardens, designed the gardens around the palace. There are human sculptures made of marble and bronze in the gardens.

03. The LVP Banquets

A few years ago LVP Banquets was set up in a small building. Consisting of some small and big halls.

The majestic Lakshmi Villas Palace opens from 10:00 am-5:00 pm. The Museum opens from 10:30 am-5; 30pm. It is open every day of the week except Monday. The visiting duration is 2 to 3 hours.

By Air: The Vadodara International Airport is 7 km away from the Palace. It is the 3rd busiest airport in Gujarat and well connected with the other cities of the country. One can easily go to the palace by using any local transport. 

By train: The palace is at a distance of 4 km from the Vadodara railway station. This railway station is well connected to the other cities of Gujarat and also with the major cities of India. So, you can have a comfortable journey. You can easily hire a taxi or a cab from the station to go to the palace.
