So the king meditated every single day to please the Lord and Someday Lord found it impressive. So Lord asked to carry his lingam to Lanka but there was a condition and that was the journey from Mr.Kailash to Lanka should not stop in between.
If all these happened then whenever the lingam fall there it shall reside forever and ever. After many troubles, planning that Lord Vishnu tricked Ravana and back the lingam to earth and sat it permanently. So here thus the 12 jyotirlingas story begun.
