What is Ayyappa Temple?

Ayyappa Temple is a temple complex and a very popular shrine. Located on a hill in the village of Perinad in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. It is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in India with around 50 million devotees every year.

Who was Ayyappa?

According to mythology, the son of the God Vishnu is Ayyappa who is a revered deity of South India. Again it is also said that he is considered to be the incarnation of Vishnu and was born as a result of the union between Shiva and the mythical Mohini.

What is the History of this Temple?

There are several histories of Hindu deities in the south of India, the most famous of which is the Ayyappa Temple. It is also known as Sabarimala Temple. Lord Parasurama established 5 temples, one of which is Sabarimala and the other are Aryankabu, Punambala, Kultum Puja and Achanak Pistha. Ayyappan is worshiped as the chief deity in Sabarimala. It is also known that the prince of the Pandalam dynasty was the incarnation of the god Ayyappan and he meditated in the Sabarimala temple. For almost three hundred years it was not in the form of devotees. Then in the 12th century the Tamil king Rajasekhara discovered the way to this place. Since then the temple has been renovated which has now become a famous pilgrimage site.

The house has a copper-plated roof and four gold finishes, a flagpole and two pavilions. The main staircase of the temple consists of 16 steps, each of which is sacred. There are some other temples in the whole complex like Nilkal Mahadev Temple, Palliyara Bhagwati, Pamba Ganapathi Temple.

By Rail: Kottayam Railway station is the nearest railway station about 90 km away and it is very well connected to the other major cities.

By Road: Road service is so good for reaching the temple because Kerala state operates buses from major cities to Kerala. So you can take a bus and easily reach the temple.
