The history behind Aina Mahal Palace
The fantastic palace Aina Mahal was built by Rao Lakhpatji in around 1750. Ram Singh Malam was the chief architect and designer of this beautiful palace. He lived in Europe for 18 years and mastered several European crafts. The construction cost of the palace was nearly 80 lakh Koris or about Rs. 20 lakh.
In 1977 the palace was converted to a museum. In 2001, it was damaged because of the earthquake, and a part of the mahal was restored and now houses the Aina mahal Trust Museum.
The architecture of Aina Mahal
The dreamy palace Aina mahal has very unique and extraordinary interiors and a great piece of architecture. This is a two-stored palace that is constructed with stone and decorated with stone carvings and wood fretwork. It was designed in local style and decorated with European Style.
The floor of the places is decorated with blue delftware tiles and the marble walls are decorated with mirrors which are separated by gilded frames.The rooms are manifested by using candelabra and chandeliers with a shade of Venetian glass all were made locally under the supervision of Ram Singh Malam. The pillars and roofs are beautifully decorated with golden moldings and other ornaments.
The first floor of the palace has an audience Hall, the pleasure Hall, the Hall of Mirrors, and the State Apartments. On the second floor, there is an antechamber, Darbar Hall and Marriage Hall.
Collections of Aina mahal
On the first floor, there are 15m long and 22cm wide scroll paintings depicting the royal procession of Maharao Pragmalji II. There is an operational pendulum clock made by Morarji Lakhamshi Soni in 1839 which is synchronized with the Hindu calendar. In the museum, you will also find a huge collection of paintings, including some of them that were acquired by Ram Singh during his Europe visit, photographs, royal possessions, finest samples of the Kutch embroidery.
The Hira Mahal which is located in the center of the first floor of Aaina mahal nest to the Hall of a mirror. There is one bed of Maharao Lakhpatji, which he used for a year according to legends. His last bed has pure golden legs. The bed is surrounded by more than 27 large mirrors.
