The history behind Aguada fort:
There is a long history behind Fort Aguada. The construction of this fort was started in 1609 by the Portuguese who ruled the region at that time and it was completed in 1612 under Viceroy Ruy Tavara’s supervision. The meaning of the word Aguada is freshwater in the Portuguese language. The fort was built to guard and defend the Portuguese stronghold from the Dutch and Maratha attacks. A four-storied lighthouse was erected on the fort’s premises in 1864.

This fort is a fantastic piece of architecture. It is made in Portuguese military style of architecture. It was constructed using laterite stone which was found in Goa. It was categorized into two parts- upper part and lower part.
