About Udaipur

Udaipur is a popular city in the western Indian state of Rajasthan and it was the capital of the state of Mewar. Founded in 1559 by the Maharana King Udai Singh ll, it is known for setting up multiple artificial lakes and scenic royal residences. Lake Pichola

Everyone is aware of this amazing Lake Pichola; It’s a man-made wonder and carrying  another important identity of Udaipur. The lake is 4 km long and is also believed to be one of the most beautiful lakes. Visitors to Udaipur do not want to miss a boat ride to Pichola Lake, which starts from Rameshwar Ghat in the City Palace. There are two famous islands in the lake. One is known as Jag Niwas and the other as Jagmandir. At Jagniwas Island one has the opportunity to witness another famous place in Udaipur – the Lake Palace (Now known as Taj Lake Palace), whereas on Jagmandir Island, you can visit the popular Jag Mandir, the palace.

Lake Palace

Greatly built in the lap of Pichola Lake, this Lake Palace is one of the most scenic places in Udaipur. Located on Jag Niwas Island, this popular site is now maintainied by the Taj Group and is also known as the “Taj Lake Palace”. With the Aravalli Hills in the background, Lake Palace is one of the most romantic places to stay in Rajasthan. Even if you can not afford to stay here, you should definitely consider this hotel a traditional walk. Built by Maharana Jagat Singh II, the palace is an iconic architectural style consisting of gilt molding, fretwork curtains and sculpted marble. One of the most romantic places for couples is the Lake Palace, which gives a new definition of romance!

Jag Mandir

It is a 17th-century structure that stands proudly in the middle of Lake Pichola on Jagmandir Island. Jag Mandir is a great place to visit during your visit to Udaipur. Along with the central building of the Jagmandir, there is an interesting structure called the Jag Mandir, which is recognized by the marble elephants located outside. It is a three-storied structure and includes sections like Gul Mahal, an elegant façade, a Garden Courtyard and the Darikhana on its northern side, the Bara Patharon ka Mahal (palace of the 12 stones), the Zenana Mahal – a southern extension to the Gul Mahal and the Kunwar Pada ka Mahal.

Many tourists experience this beautiful place while sailing on Pichola Lake. Those interested must not miss to visit this historic place.

Saheliyon Ki Bari

“The Garden of the Maidens” literally means “Saheliyon Ki Bari”. It was built by the Maharana Bhopal Singh. It is located in the northern part of the city. This beautiful place was built for the maids who came to Udaipur with the princess. This place of interest is primarily regarded as part of the dowry. All kinds of recreational activities were held by this place. The maids could sing, dance and engage in various recreational activities. Its courtyard is beautifully decorated with artificial fountains, kiosks, marble elephants and a picturesque lotus pool. It is definitely a beautiful place in Udaipur, which you will not want to miss.

Lake Fatehsagar

Udaipur is incomplete except for the actual Fatehsagar Lake, which is located north of Pichola Lake and is connected by a canal. It is one of the major tourist attractions of Udaipur. You can choose the option of boat riding on Fatehsagar Lake to take a beautiful view of the city from outside the city. Taking a boat ride on Lake Fatehsagar is indeed a must-do activity in the city if you are looking for some fun in the city.

Monsoon Palace/Sajjangarh Palace

The palace is located about 9 km from the old city of Udaipur. The Monsoon Palace was once the favorite destination of the royal family during the monsoon season. The palace is located on a hill and looks like a fairy tale from a distance. The palace is now famous for watching the sunset. If you are planning your trip to visit the Barsha Palace and want to add something fun to it, you can visit the nearby Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary. Undoubtedly you’ll able to spend some quality time here.

Vintage Classic Car Museum

Another example of the royal heritage that is the whole of Udaipur is the Vintage Classic Car Museum. Housed in the former state garage are 22 vehicles, which includes a seven-seat 1938 Cadillac; 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom, which was used in the famous James Bond movie, Octopussy; and the Cadillac convertible that once whisked Queen Elizabeth II to the airport in 1961. This museum is situated at a short distance of 1km from City Palace and is indeed one of the best sightseeing places in Udaipur.

Mansapurna Karni Ropeway

This ropeway is a popular tourist attraction to enjoy the city of Udaipur. The cable car is installed between two mountains on the shores of Lake Pichola. The view enjoyed by tourists from here is a great place for many admirers and photographers, as you can get the best view of Udaipur from here. Lake Pichola, Lake Fateh Sagar, City Palace, Sajjangarh Fort and the Arwali Mountains on the other side of the lake are clearly visible from here. Udaipur Solar Observatory

Located on an island in Fatehsagar Lake, Udaipur Solar Observatory is considered as one of the best solar observation sites in India. It was modeled on the Solar Observatory at Big Bear Lake in Southern California. It was founded by Dr. Arvind Bhatnagar. Surrounded by water, it provides a great environment for solar observation. The only way to reach the observation is by boat. Since it is surrounded by water, boats are the only way to get here. It is definitely a funny and adventurous journey. If you are in Udaipur then this is a place you should visit!

How To Reach

By Road: Udaipur is well-connected with many other major cities by road. Udaipur bus-stand is located inside the city. You can find regular buses from many cities inside Rajasthan and numerous top cities around the country. Buses run to and fro throughout the day. You can find both private and public buses with varying luxury level. The frequency and demand for buses depend on the season.

By Train: Udaipur is well-connected to many other major cities in India such as Jaipur, Delhi, Kolkata, Indore, Mumbai and Kota. Some of the popular trains that run daily are Mewar Express, Gwalior-Udaipur Express, Bandra-Udaipur SF Express, Chetak Express and Annanya Expres. In fact, the famous and luxurious Palace of Wheels also makes a scheduled stop in Udaipur. After reaching the railway station, you can easily hire a taxi or an auto-rickshaw depending on where do you want to get down in the city. The fare will depend on the number of kilometers covered.

By Air: Udaipur has no any airport of its own. The nearest airport from Udaipur is the Maharana Pratap Airport, which is situated about 20 kms away from the city center. It is well-networked by air to all major cities in India including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Jaipur. Some of the popular airlines that have daily flights to and from Udaipur are Jet Airways, Indian Airlines, Air Deccan, and Kingfisher Airlines. After reaching the airport, you can hire cabs or book pre-paid taxis that are easily available for travelling between the airport and the city.
