Tawang was anciently portion of Tibet colonized by the  people of Monpa. In 1681, Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso in accordance with the wishes of the 5th Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso, founded the Tawang Monastery. And surrounding its name there is  an interesting legend, which behalfs “Chosen by Horse”. Buddhist chants drifting in the air, and mysterious monks engrossed in prayers, then Tawang is what you’re most likely thinking about, if Shangri-La conjures up images of an earthly paradise isolated from the outside world, happy people. Descriptive Tawang is a gradually populated mountainous tract seated at a height of near about 10,000 ft above sea level, lying on the northwest extremity of Arunachal Pradesh in north east India. It is also the place  of the 400-year-old Tawang monastery, which is  one of the oldest and the widest monasteries in India and outside of Lhasa it is the biggest .

How to Reach

By Air: Though Arunachal Pradesh doesn’t provides any specific airline but is well linked by air to the state. The nearby airport located in Tezpur, Assam is Salonibari Airport. An International airport named Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi is situated in Guwahati which is at a distance of 480 km from Tawang.
By Train: Since there is no proper railway connectivity within Arunachal Pradesh the near by railway station is Rangapara situated in Tezpur, Assam which is well connected with some few major cities. From the station one have to hire a transport to reach Bhalukpong and then proceed to Tawang.
By Road: From Bomdila, there are continual busses that leads to Tawang. One can get a bus to Tezpur or Bhalukpong and then get a bus to Bomdila, from Guwahati in Assam.
