Vellayani Lake

Halcyon Castle was originally built as a family retreat for the royal family of Empress Sethu Lakshmi Bai. Later it became a popular tourist attraction. Veli Tourist Village

“Veli Tourist Village” is a famous picnic spot located at the mouth of the river Veli. Located about 12 km from Thiruvananthapuram, the site offers a variety of leisure activities. Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium

Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium is situated in one of the busiest fishing harbours of Kerala. The aquarium is situated roughly 1.5 km from Kovalam town and was established in 1997. It is now managed and administered by the Central Marine Fisheries Institute. Officially known as “Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium”, the place houses a large variety of rare aquatic species like squirrelfish, clownfish, moon wrasse and a school of invertebrates and ornamental fishes. A treasure trove of colourful corals, giant turtles, lionfish, piranhas, triggerfish, sharks surgeonfish and a lot more. It is very informative and exciting for sea explorers who can get a closer look at the mysteries of marine life.
 
The aquarium is also famous for its “Image Pearl Production”. Pearls are produced here in a special process. In the process a mold made of shell cement is embedded in the pearl-producing oyster, which produces a pearl in the shape of a mold after 2-3 months. Not great?

How To Reach

By Road: Kovalam is not so well-connected with many other cities of India by road. There are regular buses connecting Kovalam to Trivandrum. Trivandrum is around 16 km from Kovalam. As there are no direct buses from other cities to Kovalam, catching a bus at Trivandrum is the best option for those wishing to travel by bus. Buses to Kovalam can be boarded at the bus stand at East Fort. However, Trivandrum is well connected to several cities in India. Some of the major cities connected to Trivandrum by bus include Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Coimbatore and Mysore. By Train: Kovalam has no any railway station of its own. As Kovalam does not have a railway station, the best option would be to catch a train to the railway station in Trivandrum. Because the nearest railway station is in Trivandrum, which is around 15 km away from Kovalam. After reaching the railway station, you can easily hire a taxi or auto rickshaw, or catch a bus to Kovalam. By Air: Kovalam has no any airport of its own. The nearest airport to Kovalam is in Trivandrum. It’s situated at the distance of 10 km.
